OF HISTORY
Between 1841-1884, John Benjamin Dancer – Optician, Scientific Instrument Maker and originator of Microphotography worked from his shop on the site of Phoenix House. His influential clients included John Dalton & James Prescott Joule.
In 1928 Frank P. Oakley and Gerald Sanville, architects, were commissioned to design a new building for the expanding Yorkshire Insurance Company. Known as Yorkshire House it sits opposite Steam Packet House, designed by the same architects in 1910.
